Hair loss is quite a common disorder the world over. Although most people suffer from mild hair loss at least once in their life, it can be a fairly frustrating phenomenon if it crosses the limit. In severe cases, people often become bald. Although baldness is more apparent in men, women can also suffer from partial baldness. Hair loss is also considered as to be a socio-cultural problem, apart from a disease. Many people with heavy hair loss often feel embarrassed in certain situations. However, there are various treatment options available for hair loss.
The causes of hair fall are many. Of them genetic or hereditary conditions, effects of drugs and fungal infections are the most common. Recognizing the cause of hair fall is an important part of hair loss treatment. It is also an important step to get proper treatment.
Good nutrition, less stress and proper hairdressing can help in getting rid of some forms of hair loss. It has also been observed that, in some cases, correcting a hormonal misbalance may also prevent further hair fall. However, these treatments are applicable only when the reasons for excessive hair fall matches the underlying cause.
Hair loss caused due to fungal infections can be prevented by following some simple steps. These include avoiding sharing combs, hats and brushes with other people; who may be already infected by fungus. Moreover, the male pattern baldness can be, sometimes, prevented by keeping up the hygiene and using some topical ointment.
It should be understood that as the causes for hair loss are many, there may be different approaches taken by doctors. A fairly common type of hair loss, the inherited type (androgenetic alopecia) is often treated with medication. The common medications approved for hair loss by the FDA include the following;
Minoxidil: It is usually available under the brand name Rogaine. It is one of the most common over-the-counter medicines available for treatment of hair loss. It can be applied on the scalp by both males and females. However, the medicine has the highest rate of success with teens. Moreover, there may also be some side effects, such as water retention and growth of hair on other parts of the body than the scalp.
Finasteride: It is available under the brand name Propecia. This is a prescription medicine and is prescribed for only selected types of hair loss. This medicine is only prescribed for male patients and serious side effects have been reported on use by females, especially during pregnancy. It is a long term medicine meaning that the medicine may take at least 6 months to show considerable improvement. Moreover, side effects, similar to those of using Minoxidil are reported by patients after using Finasteride.
Many people resort to natural remedies for treating excessive hair loss. Dietary changes, such as sticking to green, leafy vegetables and salads, milk, fruits and sprouts can be helpful in reducing hair fall. Hair transplants and laser therapies are also popular hair loss treatments nowadays. However, it is found that a holistic approach, including dietary changes, medicine and proper nourishment offers the best results.
